Bout To The Future!:

We have some awesome skaters from all over the country playing at ‘Bout To The Future’ on Saturday 4th Feb, including some of the girls from Team England and Team Ireland!

We are based in quite a small place, but we’re in between lots of cities (Leicester, Peterborough, Nottingham…) so I hope everyone can come over and watch!

Fancy dress, an 80s gameshow quiz and an air guitar competition are some of the highlights, with the main event, of course, being the bouts between Team Ghostbusters, Team Gremlins and Team Goonies!

East Midlands…! ROLLER GIRLS NEED YOU!

We are hosting a band night fundraiser at Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge in Stamford, Lincs, to raise money for the Mean Valley Roller Girls. The money we raise will help us to buy safety equipment to keep our new recruits safe on skates and will also contribute toward our first bout on Saturday 4th Feb, 2012!

So far we have the amazing “White Clouds and Gunfire”, “A Great Notion” and “Flawless Victory” eager to entertain you!

“So what rhymes with Michelle, or Lord or Ginieres…? I have spent a large amount of time trying to think of mean sounding derby names. Its a right of passage we will all go through as derby girls and will all need to go through……MINXY MURDER…waitaminute someone already has that one…..ROBIN GRAVES….oh someone already has that one too!!!

It is a FAUX PAS (another one of my considered names) that you have the same of similar name as another derby girl….in the world, yes I did say that, in the world, so yes my english friends that does include the huge roller derby movement from the US of A!! So however clever and original you think you are being, it will have already been done I promise!!

Now finding my name, well I tried many different variations of my name as I was quite certain I wanted to keep something that resembled my name slightly, unlike some girls who go completely out and chose a celebs name and tweak it. Interesting alternative which can come up with such good choices, here are a few, Eleanor Bruisevelt, Rosa Sparkes, Babe Ruthless, Bloody Holly. However before you get any ideas I will mention once again that quite a large number of people are on the roller derby name register, http://www.twoevils.org/rollergirls/ and a lot of them will have had the same idea as you.

However there are quite a few fun websites to give you a helping hand. http://rumandmonkey.com/widgets/toys/namegen/10568/ is one of them.

Or, the best of the bunch, your fellow team members. I went through countless names and told them to my team and eventually they helped me pick the one that was meant to be, and it quite literally is meant to be. That moment when you know that your pet was meant to be called Boris….it’s like that….kind of. You will know when you have the right name.

Another point to note is that some girls go through countless names before picking one they think is the one. Either way once you have gone through the endless task of picking the right sounding mean roller derby name you then have to pick a number….maybe my lucky number will be ok…it is after all a lot easier to pick.”

New blog post by ‘Moz Burnside’ of the Mean Valley Roller Girls!

“My first introduction to Roller Derby was during a visit to a friend’s house earlier this year, when the Ellen Page movie, ‘Whip It’ was showing on TV late at night. “That looks like so much fun!” I remember thinking to myself, before passing it off as an American thing, and pretty much forgetting about it.

A few months later, I changed jobs, desperate to get out of the rut I was in and into a new routine. I now had free weekends! Great, I thought - aside from the fact that I actually had nothing to do during those free weekends. Boredom struck, and as a Gemini, I don’t do boredom, so naturally I was going slightly mad. I was told by friends and family that I needed to get out and do something, but that’s easier said than done in a place like Rutland.

Enter Roller Derby.

I was browsing through my Twitter feed one morning, and came across a tweet by one of my followers (now known to me as the lovely ‘Hels Bitchen’) which was advertising Roller Derby practice at my old school in a few weeks time. After heading over to the Mean Valley Roller Girls website and asking a few questions, I knew this was something I had to do.
After hesitating a while, I decided to buy my own skates for my first session, despite having not skated since I was very young. The excitement I felt when they arrived was something I hadn’t felt in a while, and it was very refreshing – I was finally going to do something for myself!

Finally, after what seemed like an excruciatingly long wait, the first Sunday of practice arrived. I had no idea what to expect, and I was very nervous – would there be people like me who had no idea how to skate, or would everyone be amazing at it? Thankfully, my fears were dispersed as soon as I entered the sports hall! Everyone was very welcoming and friendly, and most were in the same boat as I was. Phew! After signing waivers, we borrowed some kit and got our skates on, led by the fabulous ‘Diva La Lunatic’ and her hubby Marcell. I was incredibly wobbly but felt great, and at the end of the session, Derby had firmly planted itself into my brain.
I went home and researched as much as I could, watched live bouts on the WFTDA website, and felt myself fall in love with this exciting sport.

Now, after 4 weeks of practice, I can feel myself getting better. I have something to look forward to every weekend, and even sometimes during the week, when we all meet up to have a team chat. I have an alter-ego – ‘Moz Burnside’ – and I feel more confident. I’m getting fitter! And most importantly, I’ve made new friends!

Roller Derby got me out of my rut, and is changing my life for the better.

My new mantra is: “Keep calm and skate faster.” I think it’s a good one.

Fundraising Ideas?

We’re thinking of some fundraising ideas so that we can get spare kit for newbies, rent other training venues, amonst other things!

So far we have:

- Bag packing

- Bake sale

- Jumble sale

- Car boot sale

- Band Night/Fundraising evening

- Creating stickers/badges/flyers etc

Has anyone done anything like this before that could give us an idea of what works best? Or even fundraising inspiration that they could share with us! :-)
